SoPac Trail Buzz

Friends of the SoPac Trail,

Before we start summer travels and vacation plans, I would like to give you a short recap of what the steering committee has been doing for the last several months. We’ve been busy!

First, we recently held our version of a Garden Party at the Butterfly Pollinator Garden and SoPac Respite Area. Approximately 100 residents and their children attended a fun Sunday afternoon event on the trail. Our purpose was to get residents out, meet new neighbors and trail users, recruit new members, and enjoy the place we all love, the SoPac Trail. The day centered around the pollinator garden with nature-related art activities, a bee exhibit, chalk art, garden art, free lemonade and ice cream that delighted the kids. The event was so successful that we plan on making it an annual event.

In July, trail users will get to enjoy a nice shade structure at the watering hole next to the garden. Funded by a grant from The Lyda Hill Philanthropies, Lakewood Trails, White Rock Neighborhood and private donations from local residents and in coordination with Dallas Park and Recreation, the committee selected and purchased a 14-foot fabric shade structure which we believe will be an attractive and welcomed escape from the summer heat.

And of course, the pollinator garden requires constant upkeep and maintenance. Pruning, weeding, mulching, replacing damaged plants is constant. They don’t call it “tending” a garden for nothing. But it’s ok as the bees and butterflies really benefit from the work.

We hope you have noticed that the concrete pillars under the Mockingbird Bridge have remained free of graffiti. This is ongoing work that will look to expand to the 7 bridges within the SoPac Trail.

Lastly, the committee met recently to plan our activities for next year and beyond. Our work will continue to focus on amenities which make the SoPac Trail safe and enjoyable for all to use. If you have an area of concern along the trail, please contact us. We look forward to your partnership and support. We couldn’t do it without you!
